Pepperbox Pistols

Antique Pepperbox type pistols were amongst the first concealable, repeating small arms. Before the advent of fixed barrel, true revolving pistols (such as Colt's Patent revolvers), the simplest way to make a weapon capable of discharging multiple shots without the need to reload, was simply to add more loaded barrels.

This logic in firearms design dates back centuries, though it was not until the invention of the Percussion system by the Reverend Forsyth in the early 19th century that this became a truly viable design. Unique in appearance, the pepperbox style of pistol was popular from the 1830s to the 1850s, when true revolver designs gained ascendancy, though had a small resurgence in later decades with compact pinfire designs.

Mark Twain said of the pepperbox. To aim along the turning barrel and hit the thing that was aimed at was probably never done with an Allen in the world, small praise for such a successful design. The pepperbox was undoubtedly not a long range weapon, but was a massively popular style of pistol during its vogue, with makers large and small offering their own variant.

Pepperbox pistols were ubiquitous in the middle decades of the 19th century, and this is reflected in the great number of extant pistols and varying designs. Here at Henry Krank & Co we are pleased to offer for sale an unbeatable range of pepperbox pistols, from fantastic quality Rigby Patent pepperboxes, to unusual ignition methods and later Le Facheaux pinfire designs. We're confident you won't find a better range of antique pepperboxes for sale anywhere.
